SCOTT Iremonger clinched the Abbott Hill Club Championship (stableford format competition), played over two days at Caversham Heath at the weekend.

Iremonger (14hcp) scorched around the course on the second day with 40 points (23 points on the back nine, including a nil return).

Together with the 30 points scored the day before, his 71 points was enough to give him a one-point victory over David Jubb (8hcp) with rounds of 36 and 34 for 70 points.

Third was Archie Smith (1hcp) with rounds of 31 and 37 giving him 68 points, on countback from Andy Holmes (12hcp) who carded 35 and 33 for 68 points.

Niall Ward (21hcp) led after day one with 36 points, alongside David Cuthbertson and Jubb. However, Ward faded on the Sunday and could only amass 20 points to finish tied for 27th position.

Smith’s 37 points on day two included 10 pars and flour birdies while Holmes had a nil return on his last hole – his second on the back nine on Sunday.

Twos were recorded by Paul Lobban (8th hole) on Saturday and by Thomas Bale and Cuthbertson (8th hole), and Duncan Mee (17th hole) on the Sunday.

Joyce Collins (27hcp) claimed the J&P Ladies Vase on countback from Caroline Reeves (36 hcp) and Caroline Dover (26hcp), all on 32 points. Dover blew her chances after recording two nil returns in her last four holes.

The winning team at the Ways and Means Trust Charity Day at Caversham Heath were Sunil Shah, Mon Shah, Madhu Shah and Barney Wytchard.

The individual winner was John Parnell with 37 points.

Parnell also won the nearest the pin competition and Neil Green recorded the longest drive.

The day raised more than £3,000 for the charity.

George Hindmarsh, James Murphy, John Reed and John Anderson, known as “The Foreshank Redemption” recently completed a 72-hole marathon in one day at Caversham Heath to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Calcot Park

IN support of England’s World Cup match against Panama, Calcot Park club captain Chris Shackell organised an early-morning fun Texas Scramble insisting, under penalty of a donation to the Captain’s Charity, everyone wore a Panama hat during play.

The morning started with a Champagne breakfast followed by a shotgun start which had everyone back in the clubhouse to see England beat Panama.

The winners of the event with a nett medal score of 50.8 were Alex Cooper, Mark Cossey, James Storey and Jason Wagner.

Runners-up were Neil Canning, Jon Green, Dave Humphreys and Damien Willis with a nett score of 55.5, while third Place went to Alan Edwards, Darren Gatward, Joe Korting and Andrew Marsh with 55.9.

West Berks

FIFTEEN teams enjoyed a stableford ‘waltz’ competition to celebrate Sandy Miller’s Lady Captain’s Day at West Berks.

Ann Johnson, Steve Johnson and Dennis White won with 84 points while Tina Clayton, Tony Coventry and Shaun Ponsford were second on 82 and Jane Brackenbury, Greg Giles and Colin Price third with 76.

The highlight of the day was Colin Price scoring a hole-in-one on the 11th hole to scoop the ‘twos’ pool. Derek Smith is the senior champion for the second time having previously won the title in 2013. He shot a gross 76 and was six shots clear of Nick Bishop in second place, while Rob Bridgeman and Richard Bower tied for third place with 83.

Nick Bishop won the nett prize with 67.

Renee Wheeler and Brackenbury won the West Berks qualifier for the Ping 4BBB national competition with 50 points. Mary Harwood and Gale McAuley were second on 43 points while Sandy Miller and Georgie Seaman were third on 39.

Mike Sparvell won the midweek stableford with 42 points edging ahead of Bob Bridgeman who, with 41 points, took second place from John Harris on countback.

Harwood won the ladies’ midweek medal with a gross 94, nett 72.

Gale McAuley was second with nett 74, while Simone Diamond took third spot with 80.

Chris Terrett won the Liddiard nine-hole stableford competition with 24 points, Jason Kendal, was second with 20 points, while Malcolm Budworth was third with 18. There was a three-way tie on 35 points in the Saturday stableford with Chris Hunt winning from Nick Jones and Darren Galbraith on countback.

In team events the seniors won at home to Sand Martins by 3½-2½, while the men’s Saturday team lost 4½-1½ at North Wilts.

Sonning

SONNING 3rds drew with Henley 2½-2½, with the victorious pairs Graham Burgess and George Jennings (4&3) and Ryan Hall and Michael Harrison (3&1).

Chris Sandy and Keith Avenell halved their match, with Bill Branagh and Jack Shone (4&3) and Mike Townend and Neill Elliot (2&1) defeated.

Megan Hewinson won 7up, but Sonning Juniors were beaten 3-1 at Goring & Streatley in round two of the Stags Trophy.

Sonning Vets enjoyed a fine 5-1 victory against Temple.

Nick Pflaeger and Ed Browning (4&2), Richard Bianga and John Allen (3&2), Fred Freeman and Graham Swatridge (4&2), Martin Dalton and David Valentine (3&2) and Danny Mclaughlin and Mike Reeves (3&2) were all triumphant, while captain John Kick and Paul Cain (3&2 were the only duo to lose.

Sonning 4ths defeated Reading 3½-1½.

Steve Kent and Ivor Dewsbury battled to a 2&1 win before debutant Mark Smith and Valentine cruised to a 6&4 success.

Chris Emerson and Peter Townson prevailed 3&2 before Paul Kennedy and John Searle halved their game, with the only defeat coming in the last encounter.
