DAVID Meyler is relishing the chance to play under Paul Clement and take Reading FC to the next level.

Royals snapped up Meyler on a free transfer this week after he decided to leave Hull City when his contract expires at the end of the month.

The 29-year-old midfielder penned a two-year deal at Madejski Stadium on Tuesday, with the option of third year thrown in.

The Republic of Ireland international immediately set out his goal to help take Reading back to the Premier League, having already won two promotions from the Championship with Hull and Sunderland.

And Meyler believes Clement is the perfect coach to bring success back to Madejski Stadium after a poor campaign last season that saw Jaap Stam depart in March and Reading finish 20th in the table.

Clement, 46, is regarded as one of the top coaches in the game after excelling as assistant manager at Real Madrid, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

David Meyler signed a two-year deal with the option of a third.

He landed the Champions League, Copa del Rey, Super Cup and Club World Cup with Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, a Premier League and FC Cup double at Chelsea and the French League 1 title with PSG.

Meyler said: “If you look at his CV, I know he’s been assistant manager and coach at some massive clubs throughout Europe.

“He has experience of winning, he knows what it takes to win and that’s what it’s all about, really. It’s about winning games and in the Championship, it’s a tough division.

“It’s a 46-game season so there are a lot of Saturday-Tuesdays, and we’ve got to try and win as many games as we can.”

Clement has wasted no time in strengthening his squad for the 2018/19 campaign with three signings already completed – all free transfers.

Ex-Manchester United defender John O’Shea signed a one-year deal yesterday after seven years with Sunderland, while Barnsley captain and right-back Andy Yiadom has penned a three-year contract.

Any Meyler cannot wait to meet up with his new team-mates when the players return from their summer breaks at the end of the month.

“The idea is to get in have a full pre-season, get to know the lads and, obviously, I do know a few of them,” stated Myler, who has played alongside skipper Paul McShane for Hull City and Republic of Ireland and is a former Sunderland team-mate of Vito Mannone and O’Shea.

“It’s going to be fun and I’m looking forward to it because it’s a new challenge. I’ve been at Hull for six years so it’s something different.

“As much as it’s good to settle in quickly, it’s about winning.

“I just want to win games and, once you start winning, that brings the camaraderie together and the lads are all looking forward to the next game. That’s got to be our aim.”
