SHANE Cooper-Clark’s 62nd goal of the season capped off an incredible campaign as Thatcham Town lifted the FA Vase trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Cooper-Clark’s first-half penalty was the only goal of the game as the Kingfishers held firm to deny Stockton Town’s stellar effort to get back into the tie.

But Danny Robinson’s side held out for a deserved 1-0 win to win the Vase for the first time in the club’s history.

Robinson named an attacking lineup with Cooper-Clark, Gavin James and Ekow Elliott all in the starting XI.

Stockton Town looked the brighter of the two sides in the opening minutes and nearly carved out an early chance through a delightful Joe Carter cross.

But Thatcham came to life Gavin James turned his man inside the penalty area before seeing his powerful shot cannon off a defender and out for a throw-in.

Ekow Elliott then cut inside onto his favoured right foot before sending his shot marginally wide of Michael Arthur’s post with 10 minutes on the clock.

But Stockton squandered a glorious chance to take the lead when Baboucarr Jarra cleared Chris Stockton’s header off of the line with the goal-mouth gaping.

Fred Woodhouse had looped the ball of Kingfishers’ keeper Michael Arthur but Jarra’s brave challenge spared his blushes.

But just seconds later Thatcham were awarded a penalty Jordan Brown was hacked down in the penalty area by James Ward.

Cooper-Clark stepped up to put Thatcham in front after Arthur almost palmed away his powerful spot-kick.

Brown was in the thick of the action again when his floated delivery almost found its way to James, who was lurking in the six-yard box ready to pounce.

James could have doubled Kingfishers’ lead with 35 minutes gone when he cleverly turned his man before scuffing a left-footed shot wide.

Fleet-footed Elliott tried to cleverly slip in James with the outside of his boot but the tame cross was hooked clear for a throw-in.

He then tried to dink the ball over Arthur from 30 yards but his attempt dipped well over the Stockton keeper’s crossbar.

Cooper-Clark nearly doubled Thatcham’s lead on the stroke of half time when his 20-yard volley was cleverly parried away by Arthur.

And Robinson’s side held firm to take a deserved 1-0 lead into the break.

Thatcham had an early scare in the second period when Stockton squandered a gilt-edged chance to level the scoreline after being picket out by Tom Coulthard.

A goal-mouth scramble followed but Robinson’s side just about cleared the ball away.

Jamie Owens’ trickery on the edge of the box sent Jarra the wrong way but the eventual shot drifted just wide of Rackley’s post.

But James should have put Robinson’s men further in front when he fluffed his lines from a matter of yards following Elliott’s clever cut-back.

Cooper-Clark saw a shot well saved by Arthur just seconds later as the Kingfishers suddenly came to life once again.

Substitute Matthew Garbutt flashed his delivery across the box with 62 minutes gone but Woodhouse was just too far away.

Un-marked James was left incensed when his left-footed strike crashed off of the crossbar and looked to have crossed the line, but referee John Brooks waved play-on.

James continued to be a threat going forward and shot-stopper Arthur had to palm away the striker’s cross come shot after 71 minutes.

Cooper-Clark did brilliantly to find Elliott in the box but the unmarked winger went for glory with a mis-timed bicycle kick.

It was 62-goal man Cooper Clark’s final involvement of the game as he made way for Ross Cook on 77 minutes.

Robinson’s side then survived another scare as Jarra cleared another ball off of the line as Michael Dunwell’s side started to pile on the pressure.

Stockton continued to probe the Kingfishers’ resilient defence as the final whistle grew closer at Wembley Stadium.

In fact, Dunwell’s side were denied a number of clear-cut chances as Robinson’s side began to tire.

Garbutt’s lung-busting run saw space open up for the full back but his strike was cleared for a corner on 87 minutes.

A wave of corners followed but Kingfishers stood firm to keep the ball away from Arthurs’ net.

Kingfishers’ swift counter-attack presented second-half substitute Cook with a glorious opportunity but the forward blazed his shot over the bar in the first of five added minutes.

Ross Cook thought he had stroked the ball into an empty net in the 96th minute after Kingfishers broke free from a corner.

It was the final action of the game as Robinson's side capped off a wonderful season with a win at Wembley.
