SONNING moved into the second round of the Hillman Trophy with a dramatic 4-3 victory against Denham Artisans.

Kelvin Hodges edged home 1up before Rodney Barratt doubled Sonning’s advantage with a 4&3 success.

Richard Shillito (2dn) and Mark Sawyer (1dn) were both beaten before Colin Hodges and George Jennings both halved their fixtures.

However, Alex Measures held his nerve in the decisive match, holing a three-foot putt to seal a 1up success.

In the second round, Sonning will host Maidenhead on Saturday, May 26.

Sonning 2nds lost 3½-1½ to Reading as they suffered a first defeat of the season.

Ben Sheffield and Stuart Collier went down 4&3 in the opening match, and Reading went further in front when Mick Hardyman and Elliot Hodges lost 2&1.

George Maxted and the returning Stephen Heather ran out 2up winners, while Duncan Forbes and Ken Paterson Jnr gained a well-deserved half.

Sonning were unable to snatch a draw as their final pair of Paul Robson and Andy Keer were beaten 3&2.

Sonning juniors lost 3-1 to Goring & Streatley, Fen Law and Jack Green gaining halves for their club.

In the Juniors’ Stags Trophy, Sonning beat a two-man The Buckinghamshire side 6-0, albeit the visitors conceded four of the six matches.

Stuart Harrison was second on nett 72 and Gary Abraham with 74 beat Luke Prestoe on count-back to take third place.

Paul Chadwick with gross 86, nett 73 beat Colin Harrison on count-back to win Division Two, while Christopher Prior won Division Three with gross 97, nett 73.

John Bennett followed up his win in last week’s Saturday Stableford by winning the Seniors’ May medal with a gross score of 91, nett 69.

Robin Knape shot nett 74 to beat Alan Stark on count-back to take second place.

John Harris scored 38 points to win the men’s Saturday stableford on count-back from Mustapha Mzouri, while Simon Brown was third with 36.

The men’s senior team won 4½-1½ at home to Caversham Heath, while the men’s team lost a Saturday friendly fixture 4-2 at Sandford Springs.

Stuart King won the Wednesday nine-hole stableford competition with 22 points with Dan Taylor just one shot behind in second place.
