MARK Symons won the President’s Bowl at Sonning, the six-handicapper recording 41 stableford points to beat Chris Gurney Jnr (5hcp) on count-back.

Ryan Hall (19hcp) was third, two points back.

Sonning lost 2½-1½ to Thames Valley Police in a friendly.

  • JOSEPH Sicheri claimed the Shah Bowl in a stableford format competition held at Caversham Heath on Saturday.

Sicheri (8hcp) held on to win Division One with even halves of 19 points for a combined tally of 38 points, despite shooting two bogeys to end. Runner-up was Michael Deignan (6hcp) with 37 points (halves of 17 and 20).

Third was David Jubb (8hcp) with 35 points. Jubb had two bogeys and a double bogey in his last four holes.

Division Two winner was Andy Holmes (13hcp) with 38 points (halves of 20 and 18 with a nil return and a double to end). Second was Peter Bishop (14hcp) with 36 points on count-back from Michael Hamilton (14hcp).

Hamilton went out in 22 points but he had a disastrous finish, ending double bogey, bogey, nil return, double bogey, bogey, bogey. After starting with a triple bogey, Garfield Bryant scorched around the front nine in 23 points, including seven pars. Although he could only muster 14 points on the back nine, his combined total of 37 points was enough to win Division Three.

Runner-up was Jane Weller (21hcp) with 35, despite recording two nil returns and two doubles on her back nine. Third was Caroline Dover (26hcp) with 31 points.

Both Deignan and Holmes received a one-shot cut in handicap.

  • GEORGIE Seaman won the Turner Davies Trophy with 32 points at West Berks, Sian Soanes taking second spot with 28 and Tina Mulford a further shot behind in third place.

Meanwhile, Carl McCartney and Chris Moore won a closely fought Clama Trophy with 39 points, beating Chris Ward and Johnny Corbridge on count-back while Mark Kendal and Graham Coe were just one shot back in third place.

Chris Terrett scored 36 points to win the men’s midweek stableford, Mike Sparvell was second with 34 and Ian Haines was one point behind, beating Colin Harrison on count-back to take third place.

Soanes, Bob Fagg and Aileen Summers won the midweek mixed competition with 79 points. Allan Trotman, Val King and Dennis White were second on 77 and Susie Boultwood, Sparvell and Renee Wheeler third on 74.

Mary Harwood, Gale McAuley and lady captain, Sandy Miller, entered the Berkshire County Ladies Division Two qualifying medal played last week at Donnington Valley with considerable success.

Harwood won the overall gross competition with a gross 96, nett 75 while all three ladies were placed in the top 16 and thus qualify for the Ann Bryant Cup, a singles, scratch, matchplay competition.

The West Berks men’s team gained a 2½-2½ draw at Oxford City in a friendly match.

  • MATT Hallet is the new name which will appear on the honours board at Theale Golf Club after winning the Founders Bowl, donated by Mike Lowe, This is traditionally the first qualifying competition of the new season for Theale golfers and it also starts a new order of merit where the first 10 in each qualifying game receive points which are totalled at the end of the season.

On a tough day for all the golfers, despite the course being in excellent condition, Hallet scored a gross 93 giving him a nett 72.

Second was club captain Keith Dawson, gross 77/nett 72 and in third spot was Darren Smith, 79/73. These were the only three on the day to achieve handicap reductions.

  • GORDON Kinghorn has been named as the new men’s captain at Hennerton.

He takes over from Tony Fiddy, who recently presented a cheque for £5,000 to ‘The Wooden Spoon Society’ – an sporting organisation which specialises in the development of children’s rugby – made up of funds raised throughout his year at the helm.

Eileen Holmes is the new ladies’ captain, Chris Neale leads the seniors and Kate Jesseman will skipper the juniors.
