ANAYA Patel took on the best young table tennis players in England and came away with a bronze medal.

Patel, who plays for Kingfisher Club in Reading, was seeded fifth for the Cadet National Cup, which sees the top 10 players on the Table Tennis England rankings play each other on a round-robin basis to decide the champion.

And Patel performed above expectations to win seven of her nine matches in Grantham, including a superb 4-3 (9-11, 14-12, 7-11, 11-3, 5-11, 11-5, 11-2) victory over top-seed Jasmin Wong.

Both Patel and Wong finished one win behind gold medallist Ruby Chan, Wong taking silver ahead of Patel and fourth-placed Mille Rogove on countback of results.

The medal was an extra present for Patel, who lives in Basingstoke and who celebrated her 14th birthday on Saturday.

Anaya said: “I didn’t come here expecting to win a medal, so it’s good that I did. I just kept calm and didn’t try to think about the results, but about how I was playing.

“It’s a really long tournament and quite tiring, so you have to try to keep your energy up.”

League round-up:

KINGFISHER A virtually assured themselves of the Reading and District League Division One title by holding off their club's B team by a 6-4 margin.

A Daniel Moses maximum included a 11-6 11-5 11-9 victory over Hari Gehlot, who recovered to win his next two, beginning with a 11-9 8-11 11-8 11-8 success over Martin Adams. 

Steve Murgatroyd and Andrew Parker hat tricks saw Kingfisher C beat Tidmarsh A 6-4, the latter winning a thrilling contest against Tony Baker 11-5 16-14 9-11 11-13 11-9. 

In Division Two, a two man Sonning Common & Peppard D side drew 5-5 draw at Tidmarsh B, for whom Dom Cutter defeated Niall McGrane 11-6 8-11 11-6 11-5 and Malcolm Gregory 11-8 8-11 11-9 11-9. 

Sonning Common & Peppard B remain second after coming from 0-2 down to win 7-3 at Tidmarsh C. Chris Webb, against Brian Meheux and Simon Barter put Tidmarsh ahead. But then Jeremy Willis starred with a hat-trick for SC&P, while Ray Webb chipped in with a three-straight win.

Denise Weller recorded a maximum as Sonning Common & Peppard C beat Kingfisher F 8-2, with Matt Isherwood and Tim Raby adding two wins apiece.

Champions Curzon Club A wrapped up their season with an 8-2 victory at OLOP B, Marc Brent starring with a maximum, while OLOP's Zdzislaw Jerzmanski edged to a 9-11 12-10 6-11 12-10 14-12 win over Jon Willis.  

Division 3 champions Milestone B inflicted an 8-2 defeat on two-man Kingfisher H, with Zoltan Keleman and Sanket Dave remaining unbeaten on the night.

Kingfisher I grabbed a possible relegation life line with a 6-4 win over second-placed Springfield A, Carol Byers leading the way with an excellent treble. 

Curzon Club B came from 0–4 down to draw 5-5 with Tilehurst Methodists C in Division Four. Curzon's Derek Harrison and Geoff Johnson won two each, as did Martin Wetherall and Roy Hull for Tilehurst. 

Mike Maynard,who played in the doubles with Johnson, made his first outing since the opening match of the season.

John Walker won all three to help Curzon Club C beat Kingfisher K 7–3.  

Reading FC A confirmed a third-place finish by beating Tidmarsh D 9–1 with Anthony Alleyne and Jazz Dhillon both gaining trebles.

Champions Saiyan Brothers made it 19 wins in a row by beating Sonning Common & Peppard F 7-3,with Vidhu Ravinath  recording his usual three.

There was also a treble for Binit Bhaska as runners-up OLOP D won 7-3 at fourth- placed Springfield B.  

 Division Five leaders OLOP F completed their fixtures with a 7-3 win over Tidmarsh E, thanks to Graham Stark's maximum, a double from Tony Barnett and a single from Mariusz Paluszkiewicz, whileTidmarsh replied through a Steve Andrews double and a single from John Harland.

Sonning Sports B are only one point behind OLOP with one match to play, following their 7-3 win over Springfield C, Florin Dimofte recording his 11th treble in the process to remain undefeated this season.

In their final match,Tilehurst Methodists D lost 9-1 to Springfield D, Paul Martin and Julian Lancaster both recording trebles.

Kingfisher L lost 6-4 to Reading FC B, a brace for Gill Bennett and singles for both Meriel Low and Tom Allen proving insufficient. For the winners, Derek Anderson notched a treble and Harry Edwards a double, along with a win in the doubles set for Tony Edwards and Anderson.
