JAAP Stam insists he has no intention of quitting Reading FC.

Royals crashed to their 17th Championship defeat on Tuesday night after a heavy 3-0 loss at leaders Wolves.

Reading have won just once in 17 matches, are 19th in the table and six points above the drop zone.

A growing number of disillusioned Royals fans are now calling for Stam’s head and are demanding the club take action to avoid relegation into League One.

But the 45-year-old Dutchman came out fighting and declared he remains committed to the job.

“I’m not saying I can’t be done with this any more,” stressed Stam. “I can’t do anything about that myself.

“Of course, I’m fed up with losing. I can influence games but when you talk about my position, I can’t do anything about that.”

Despite the mounting pressure on Stam, he insists he still has the full backing of the club’s illusive Chinese owners Dai Yongge and sister Dai Xiu Li.

And with only nine league fixtures to go, it is unlikely Reading will sack the Dutchman before the end of the season.

“If they want to make a change that’s down to the owners,” declared Stam.

“I spoke to them this morning (Tuesday) and they are very supportive.”

Reading have won just eight of their 37 league fixtures this season and only three at home.

More damningly, they have not celebrated a victory at Madejski Stadium on a Saturday since April 2017.

However, the former Netherland and Manchester United defender – who was linked with a move to Leeds United last summer and more recently with Dutch clubs Vitesse Arnhem and AZ Alkmaar – insists he is not ready to pack it in.

“No, that’s not it,” he continued. “I hate the situation we are in, I want to go forward and win games as well. I’m fed up with losing like everybody is.

“I know what you need to win games, but you can talk about it many times and at the end of the day the players who start need to show it on the pitch.

“I don’t think players aren’t deliberately doing their best their best, sometimes it is very difficult to change your game in our situation, they just need to try.

“We need to bring more intensity and do things with a certain mindset you make it more difficult for the opposition, and easier for yourself.”

Reading travel to Norwich City this Saturday (3pm) as they look to secure a desperately-needed victory before the international break.

They will also be eager to atone for last season’s 7-1 hammering by the Canaries at Carrow Road.

Stam, whose side face more tough fixtures against QPR, Aston Villa, Preston, Fulham and Cardiff during their final nine games, recalled: “It wasn’t the best afternoon.

"Norwich are in a position now where they don’t need to worry too much, but they know we need to go for it which can make it easier for them.

“But we need a result over there and that’s it, it’s as simple as that. It won’t be easy but we need it.”

Stam will be missing Tommy Elphick, Paul McShane, Omar Richards, Tennai Watson, Joey van den Berg, Jordan Obita, Stephen Quinn and Garath McCleary this weekend, while John Swift and Liam Kelly are doubtful.

But on-loan Derby striker Chris Martin could return to the squad after missing the last two games through illness.
