CYCLIST Rachael Elliott picked up the Sports Personality of the Year gong at the Get Berkshire Active awards evening – held at The Hilton Hotel, Reading, on Friday.

The West Berkshire star won more than 30 events in 2017, achieving a silver medal in the UK 25 mile time trial championship and setting a UK national record for cycling 30 miles.

Reading gymnast William Cowen took the Junior Sports Personality trophy. His outstanding achievements in the last 12 months include becoming national champion for the fourth time and the first British gymnast to achieve three world titles in a row.

Albatross Diving Club picked up the team performance of the year for their consistent performances at national events during the year, while Reading Lions Handball Club won the Community Club of the Year after seeing huge club growth and an increase in outreach work over the last 12 months.

Thames Valley Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club coach, Grant Barker, picked up the Coach of the Year Award, while Volunteer of the Year was presented to Sue Bennett for her work as Run Leader for West Berkshire. The Workplace of the Year Award went to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who prioritise health and wellbeing at the core of the 18 fire stations across Berkshire.

Newbury’s St Barts collected the Active Secondary School trophy for the second year running.

Nominations for next year’s Get Berkshire Active Awards will be opening in September.
