RIVERMEAD ended their Wessex League season in style with an 82-66 victory (12-4 on points) against Oxford & District, leaving them with their biggest points haul for seven years.

A massive 34-8 win by John Eatwell’s rink of Peter Cowen, Geoff Tombs and Rod Brown led the way in a clash where Oxford won just four of the 21 ends.

However, it was far from plain sailing in a match full of drama after Rivermead stood 36-28 down after nine ends, with David Brown’s away rink losing 13-1.

Yet with seasonal debutants Adrian Barrett and Dave Miles in form, they were able to turn the game on its head, winning 10 of the last 12 ends to secure a 21-15 success.

Peter Slatford’s away rink hit back from 8-0 down to level at 17-17, only to eventually slip to an 18-17 defeat, while the other home rink for Rivermead was a 25-10 reverse.

Scores – Home rinks: R Brown, G Tombs, P Cowen, J Eatwell (skip) 34-8; P Curtis, G Neal, T Stevens, L West (skip) 10-25.

Away rinks: M Fowkes, P Keep, N Cabeldu, P Slatford (skip) 17-18; A Barrett, D Miles, R West, D Brown (skip) 21-15.

Rivermead had previously suffered a heavy 95-53 (16-0) defeat against Newbury in their penultimate outing.
