IN celebration of the rugby Six Nations Championship and on a freezing cold, dark and frosty morning, Calcot Park club captain Chris Shackell arranged a Six Sections Championship, involving all of the sections of the club.

A total of 108 golfers battled it out in an individual stableford, the scores of which were added to each section and then averaged.

Shane Slatter won the A section with 33 points, with Russell Fisher claiming the honours in the B category with 37.

C Team champion was James Strang with 34 points, with Tony Sines (32), Kate Courtnage (26) and Harry West (29) taking the respective 20 Section + Seniors, Ladies, and Junior prizes respectively.

The overall tournament winners were the A team with an average of 28.8 points.

  • FOLLOWING a year of fundraising, Sonning's 2017 club captain Bill Branagh, presented a cheque for £14,825.71 to Ian Thompson from The Royal Berks Charity.

The money raised has been shared between the breast screening and urology departments at the hospital.

  • THE outgoing captains of Reading GC, Geoff Chivers and Mary Crawford, hosted their farewell event on Saturday.

More than 100 club members turned out in support and played in the morning Florida Scramble Competition with some great scoring all round.

The winning team was Brendan McKevitt, Lloyd Moore, Marcus Jones and Mark Simpson with a fantastic score of 60.8, while the runners-up were Duncan Montador, Cliff Hayden, James Cross and Nick May with 61.1.

Third place went to Sue Hussey, Pam Bishop, Colin Tungate and David Brown with a total of 61.8.

Chivers and Crawford also presented a cheque of more than £8,500 to the representatives of their chosen charities, Sport in Mind and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

  • DAVID Stankard and Jack Turrill took the honours in the men’s Daily Mail Foursomes Qualifier at Caversham Heath.

They recorded 37 points to win on count-back from Calvin and Craig Hut, while Tim Bicknell and Luke O’Brien finished in third place.

Jane and Sam Weller scored 38 points to win the Valentine’s Vase played off three-eighths handicap allowance.

Duncan Mee and Lynne Rumbold were runners-up, on count-back from Caroline and Daniel Dover, both with 35 points.

Anderson Goddard (15hcp) took top spot in Division One of the midweek stableford with 37 points (halves of 18 and 19 points).

Runner-up was Tony Gonzalez (12hcp), on count-back from Lee Kirton (12hcp), both with 35 points.

Division Two winner was John Holdsworth (27hcp) with 34 points, finishing ahead of Mike Day (21hcp) and Ben Storey (19hcp), both with 33 points.

The only two of the competition was scored by Caroline Dover on the 8th hole.

  • JANE Brackenbury and Jason Kendal overcame wet and windy conditions to win the mixed Valentines stableford at West Berks with 38 points on Saturday.

Gale McAuley and Tony Coventry were second on 34 and Derek Smith and Tina Mulford with 33 points beat Mary Harwood and Kevin Wilkins on count-back to take third place.

The team comprising Carl McCartney, Nigel Huszarik and Jimmy Green won a mixed team event played in Am-Am format scoring 83 points. Ron Hurst, Mark Munro and Richard Bower were second with 79, beating Kevin Wilkins, Stevie Cox and Chris Price into second place on count-back.

Round Four of the men’s Winter League was a Texas Scramble which produced a three-way tie on 43 points. Jason and Mark Kendal were winners on count-back with Greg Collins and Simon Barrie second and Keith Wilkins and Pete Dye third.

Sandy Miller continued her successful start to her captaincy year by winning the February Trophy event, having earlier claimed the January competition. Her score of 29 points was one clear of Harwood, while Ola Adams was third on 23.

Remarkably, there have been three holes-in-one in just 18 days at the club.

First off the mark was John Carroll on January 19 when he aced hole 7.

This was followed up when club chairman Kevin Hopwood holed out on hole 14 in a Winter League match on January 28 and Bill Hancock completed the hat-trick when he holed his tee-shot on the 17th on February 6.
