BARTON Rovers reached the quarter finals of the Berks & Bucks Women's Senior Cup after battling to a 1-0 win at Newbury.

The home side started brighter, but Rovers gradually came into the game in a goalless first half in which there were few chances.

It was Barton who started the second half the strongest and the first 10 minutes saw Newbury’s defence having to deal with a wave of Barton attacks.

Newbury then hit back and began to ramp up the pressure again, with a flurry of shots coming the way of Ellie Reed, Becky Anderson, Amy McNab and Tracey Beales.

The Barton goalkeeper was forced into two good saves and still there was no breakthrough.

The key moment arrived midway through the second half when Barton won a free-kick just inside their half.

Gemma Sims launched the ball forward into the box, it bounced and Amie Benton blasted it, right-footed, past the on-rushing goalkeeper into the back of the net.

A solid defensive display from Rovers only handed Newbury a handful of chances, but in the dying minutes the visitors were spared a penalty shoot out when Jana Penazova's 30-yard. left-footed shot hit the inside of the left post, rebounded across the face of the goal and somehow stayed out.

In the Thames Valley Counties Women's League, Barton Royals lost 4-1 to table-toppers Kingsclere Ladies. Royals’ goalscorer was Steph Nelson.

Meanwhile, in the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup, Newbury Development crushed Stanford 13-0.

Alice Hill scored a remarkable double hat-trick, while Alex Kovacsova also helped herself to a double.

Maria Rodrigues netted twice, with Nicole Beesley and Issy Cording strikes along with an own goal completing a one-sided rout.
