LAST weekend saw the 49th annual River Kennet Teams of Four Championship from Burghfield to Beat 5 (Berkeley Avenue roadbridge), writes Alan Hughes.

Ten teams, making a total of 40 anglers were booked in for this match.

The match day weather was overcast, cool, with occasional light rain, and with a strong and gusty wind blowing. The Kennet had a good colour and was flowing moderately.

Total match weight on the day was 116lbs 4ozs, at an average weight of 2lbs 11ozs per angler.

Unfortunately, we had to disqualify two team members on the day for not fishing on their allocated pegs on D section.

The winning team was YOTAC /21 Club Green which comprised Duncan Bales, Ron Cole,Tony Green and Martin Hicks.

They totalled 29 points and pushed Adventure AS & Prestcold A.C. (Roy Green, Graham Hawkins, Nick Richardson, Paul Wilding). into second spot with 28 points.

The match was won by Steve White of Yotac/21 Club Blue.

Fishing the third peg downstream of “Rosekiln Lane” Road Bridge on Beat 4B section, White banked mainly roach and a few perch during fishing stick float tactics, with single and double maggot on the hook, over caster and maggot feed, to record a weight of 17lbs 9ozs.

Cole was second overall. Fishing the first peg upstream of “Rosekiln Lane” Road Bridge also on Beat 4B section, he banked roach and perch fishing stick float tactics with single and double maggot on the hook, over hemp and caster feed, to record a weight of 5lbs 15ozs.

Glenn Miller of Tring Anglers A was third overall. Fishing the first peg downstream of the confluence of the “Holy Brook” on Beat 5B section, Miller banked one chub to 4lbs 8ozs and bits, fishing stick float tactics with single and double maggot on the hook, over hemp and maggot feed, to record a weight of 5lbs 4ozs.

The section weights were A section (Burghfield River) – 15lbs 11ozs, B section (Beat 3B) – 22lbs 2ozs, C section (Beat 4) – 51lbs 13ozs, D section (Beat 5) – 26lbs 10ozs.

Excelsior travelled to Milton Pools in Oxfordshire and had an interesting outcome to their match where John Nicholls and Mick Biles tied at the top with 98lbs and the second best weight was another tie between Rose Balcombe and her daughter Josephine Sproat with 94lbs.

The Tuesday Club travelled to Goring to fish the Thames. Steven Lewis took the honours with a 20lbs 3ozs net of mainly large skimmers. The runner-up was Ralph Sneddon with 7lbs 11ozs of roach and George Callaghan claimed third place with 7lbs 6ozs.
