THREE penalties from full back Rob Sweeney gave Reading the boost of their first away win for two-and-a-half years, beating High Wycombe 9-0 in their Southern Counties North opener.

In what was a tight, closely-contested game, with defences on top, Sweeney’s penalties were just reward for a Reading side who held the initiative, particularly in the second half, without being able to break down a solid home defence.

Reading’s new coach, Ben Wills, expressed some disappointment about his side’s lack of tries. “We created quite a few opportunities but the last pass just didn’t stick and we failed to capitalise on any of our try-scoring chances. Credit to High Wycombe, though, as they defended well. I was pleased with our defence.”

“I should like to be promoted back this year but realise this might not happen – we have the task of building up over the next year or two to provide a firm foundation for promotion – and survival at the higher level.”

New captain Charlie Davies added: “There was much promise for the future and it was pleasing to start well and get a win.”

Among the top performers were Davies, scrum half Nick Portch and new hooker Patrick Johnson, who found his line-out jumpers well and was active around the pitch.

Dan Witko at fly half distributed well and centre Pete Czernuszka made some strong and incisive runs, while Chris Greig (pictured) and Alex Dorliac also had their moments, without quite getting through.

Reading visit Windsor on Saturday (3pm).
