READING FC Women star Mandy van den Berg praised the “magical” atmosphere in Rotterdam after helping Netherlands defeat Denmark 1-0 to top their Women’s Euro 2017 group, writes Dean Cooke.

Sherida Spitse’s first-half penalty was enough to secure the victory as Holland made it two wins from two in Group A.

And Van den Berg says playing in front of a capacity crowd has helped the home nation so far, having beaten Norway in the opening fixture.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling,” admitted the 26-year-old. “It’s magical in sold-out stadiums, the atmosphere so far has been incredible.”

With Holland’s excellent start to the tournament capturing the eyes of the nation, Van den Berg can’t get enough of the fans’ backing.

“There is no pressure, I use it as extra support and it brings us a level higher,” she added. “When we attack it’s brilliant to see all these people scream and support us.”

Van den Berg played 60 minutes in what was a solid defensive display against Denmark, the centre-back showed her commitment to the fans with constant waves and hand gestures to the crowd.

In the other Group A game of the day, Belgium surprised Norway with a 2-0 victory.

And Van den Berg admitted it is difficult to avoid the hype surrounding the Dutch team.

“I don’t follow it all, I shut off all my social media and I’ve seen some things but nothing big,” she stressed. “I don’t react because my main focus is the tournament. I am forever thankful.”

Netherlands made it three wins out of three and top Group A after beating Belgium 2-1 last night.

The victory means Holland became the first team to qualify for the quarter finals of the competition.
