TWYFORD hammered near neighbours Wargrave 121-69 to win the annual Hedges Cup.

They won five of the six rinks and Paul Hynes did most of the damage, winning 34-5 along with Mary Wheeler and Mick Walker.

The other rinks were much closer apart from a 20-7 victory for Brian Stain with Alan Wrigley and Ann Harris.

Twyford beat the same opponents 43-26 (12-2 on points) in their Kennet League Division Tree East clash.

The match was abandoned due to rain after 10 ends with Twyford ahead on three of the four rinks.

Barry Carter did best along with Wrigley, Walker and Stain (15-3) and there were also victories for Phil Rose with Jim Walter, Tony Phillips and Wayne Manley (9-3) and for Mike Self with Tony Turner, Mick Kenway and Gordon Wheeler (11-6).

In Division One of the Kennet League LV, Twyford beat basement boys Royal Household 63-42 (9-1).

Nick Orde laid the foundations with a 30-13 win along with Jim Turner and Manley, while Stain, Kenway and Wheeler hung on tenaciously to record a 16-12 victory.

Carter, Steve Chamberlain and Paul Hynes managed to hang on for a 17-17 draw.

A mixed friendly at Great Hollands went Twyford’s way 121-69 mainly thanks to a 23-shot win for Carter with Jean Bennett and Wheeler (30-7) and a 25-14 victory for Stain with Wrigley and Jan Walker.

There was also a win for Orde with Jenny Self and Neil Patchin (18-13), while Mike Self, Wheeler and Annette Stain drew 16-16.

Twyford ladies continued their successful season with a 47-27 victory at Hurst in a game restricted to 15 ends due to the weather.

Ann Pope took top rink honours with Doris Robinson and Kathy Lewis (17-5), edging out Rita Orde with Moira Moule and Tina Scherer (17-9). The third rink was drawn with Jan Walker, Gill Allum and Jean Bennett finishing 13-13.

  • THREE Mile Cross overcame Woodley 48-38 (8-2) in their Kennet League LV Division One Central battle.

However, the basement boys B team were beaten 67-41 (9-1) by Tilehurst B in Division Two Central.

The club lost 40-32 (10-4) in a rain-shortened Kennet League Division One East game at Windsor & Eton, and the ladies’ team were beaten 55-51 (8-2) in their Thames Valley League Division Two game against Burghfield.

But Three Mile Cross did defeat Thatcham in a men's friendly.
