TERRY Phelps won the men’s captain’s day competition at West Berks with 39 points playing off three-quarters handicap.

Luke Prestoe was one shot behind in second place and Gale McAuley third with 36, beating Chris Ward on count-back and winning the ladies’ prize. Jane Brackenbury took the ladies’ runners-up spot with 31 points and ex-West Berks member Ian Armstrong took the visitors’ prize.

In a mixed week for West Berks teams, the scratch team lost 4-3 away to Henley in the Reading and District Golf League while the club side won 4½-1½ at Burnham Beeches to reach round three of the Hillman Trophy where they face Farnham Park away on July 1.

Meanwhile the ladies team lost 4-1 away at Donnington Grove in the second round of the Duncan Trophy, a county team knockout competition, while the seniors recorded a 3½ to 2½ away victory at Marlborough.

Jason Kendal won the June medal, shooting 76 to record a nett score of 72, four shots clear of Mark Charlton who beat Martyn Drewitt on count-back to take second place.

David Gentleman strolled to a six-shot victory in the midweek stableford. Mike Sparvell with 39 points beat Bill Loughlin on count-back to take second place.

Carol and Mike Sparvell won the Sunshine Cup, played in the memory of Sharron Williams.

They scored 47 points in the better-ball stableford competition with Ola Adams and Martin Neville on 45 points beating Ann Davies and Jock Douglas by two points to claim second place.

Carol Sparvell won the play-off of the three categories of the ladies' winter Round Robin, a singles matchplay competition played between September and March. Renee Wheeler was second and Ann Davis third.
