BURGHFIELD FC are celebrating this week after being belatedly crowned champions of Division Two of the Thames Valley Premier League.

When the season ended they found themselves second in the table, two points behind Westwood United Reserves.

However, Burghfield's abandoned fixture with Highmoor Under-21s prompted a Berks & Bucks FA inquiry, and as a result Burghfield were awarded three points, so putting them on top.

The B&B are still looking into the Premier Division game between Newbury FC and Highmoor Ibis Reserves which was abandoned in the 89th minute after three Highmoor players, two of them substitutes, and one from Newbury had been sent off.

  • NOT wishing to give their players any rest, promoted Woodley United started pre-season training this week in readiness for life in the Hellenic League's Premier Division.

Manager Michael Herbert reported a “big turnout with plenty of new faces,” and said he is looking forward to the challenge of the Premier.”

United have still to confirm where they will be playing next season, but it looks as if they intend leaving Scours Lane, their temporary home for the last three years.

After failing to agree terms with Bracknell Town, they have been looking elsewhere, including Henley Town and Thatcham's Waterside Park ground.

The Woodley club, however, have agreed one ground-sharing move.

Their reserves' pitch at Bulmershe will also be used by Thames Valley Premier League rivals Marlow United for the 2017-18 campaign.

Marlow, beaten by Woodley in April's Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup final, have been forced out of their ground for a season as it's being dug up for essential flood works.

  • WARGRAVE Cricket Club earned many plaudits after hosting their first three-day Unicorns Championship match between Berkshire and Cornwall this week.

From president Mike Hall down to the youngest member of their staff, club members turned out in force to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Not many clubs at their level can boast a seven-man ground-staff but, despite their tremendous efforts, they and the Berkshire team were eventually beaten by rain.
