DARREN Gatward and Marc French won the sixth and final round of the Tom Evans Foursomes competition at Calcot Park with 41 stableford points on Sunday.

Runners-up were Boyd Ranwell and Harji Bhanderi with 40 points on countback from Malcolm Garstang and Ray Lloyd, also on 40 points.

The Special Prize was awarded to the club chairman, Roy Burt, and Paul Mortimer.

The overall winner, determined on the best four from six cumulative placing points, was Gatward, with 15 placing points (1st; 2nd; 2nd 10th). The runner up was Harji Bhanderi, with 22 (2nd; 3rd; 4th; 13th).

  • THERE were high scores and cuts in handicap in the latest midweek stableford at Caversham Heath.

Barry Reynolds (15hcp) scored 41 points (halves of 19 and 22 points) to win Division One. Runner-up was Darren Bonney (5hcp), on countback from Matthew Murphy (16hcp), both with 40 points.

Reynolds and Murphy both received a one shot cut in handicap.

Division Two winner was Stewart Ostler (28hcp) with 44 points. Jane Weller (23hp) was second and Kjersti Cannon (22hcp) was third. Ostler came home with 23 points (including nine three point scores) and received a three shot cut. Both Weller and Cannon also received a one shot cut.

The only two of the competition was recorded by Jack Turrill on the 8th hole.

  • SONNING Vets were edged out 3.5-2.5 at Temple in a friendly.

The first match out saw Bill Branagh and John Kick against the Temple secretary Stan Edwards, playing alone due to the sudden illness of his playing partner.

It turned out to be a tough one with the Sonning pair 3up at the turn, but then pulled back to just one up on the 18th tee before they won the last for victory.

The second pair of Mike Reeves and Paul Power had a tough game before running out winners by one hole.

Danny McLaughlin and Dave Fidler managed a creditable half, but the remaining three pairs, Roger Holden and Nigel Flawn, John Sheffield and Eddie Browning, and Richard Jones and Fred Freeman, were all beaten.

  • GALE and Tom McAuley won the Chappell Cup, a mixed better-ball competition and the first board competition of the season at West Berks, with 46 points. Ann Davies and Jock Douglas were second with 42 with Tina Mulford and Derek Smith one shot further back in third place.

West Berks ladies’ team won through to the second round of the Duncan Trophy, the Berkshire county ladies knockout competition, with a 3-2 home win against Maidenhead.

Deb Weddell won the Ladies’ March midweek medal with a nett 79. Shelagh Lancaster was second with 84, while Carol Sparvel beat Sandy Miller on count-back with a net 85 to take third place. Barry Lancaster won the men’s midweek stableford with 35 points, Alan Weddell was second with 31 and Lee Nicholson third with 27.

Simon Barrie won the Saturday stableford with 43 points with Giles Feltham second and Peter Grayson third with 37 and 35 points respectively.

Martin Drew won the Sunday Spring stableford with a splendid 46 points, three clear of Derek Smith with Stuart Harrison a further three back in third.
