LIAM Moore admitted he reached his “lowest point” as a Reading FC player after conceding a last-minute penalty to hand Aston Villa a 2-1 victory.

Jordan Ayew’s 90th-minute spot-kick on Tuesday night earned Villa their first away win in 14 months and ended Reading’s unbeaten record this season at Madejski Stadium.

And Moore, who joined Royals from Premier League champions Leicester City in the summer, admitted it was a bitter pill to swallow.

“I have really enjoyed my time here but this is my lowest point so far,” confessed the 23-year-old centre-back. “I will sleep on it and you can’t change the past, you can only look forward.

“The home run has gone now, we had gone quite a while without losing and it was a run that we wanted to keep going.

“Obviously if you pick up points at home you are more than likely to be successful and we were very disappointed to lose the game.”

Moore’s clumsy challenge on Villa substitute Ayew gave referee Andy Woolmer little choice but to point to the spot.

However, the Reading defender argued: “I think Jordan was looking for the penalty, but if I look back on reflection my leg was left out and that made it easier for the referee to make the decision.

“It was at the Villa end as well and he gave it. Now we have to forget about it and move on.

“We are in a modern game of football and, unfortunately, if there is any kind of contact it’s likely to be given and that’s what happened to me.

“We looked like we were going to get a point but it wasn’t to be.”

The defeat – earning Villa a first win under Steve Bruce – was only the second in 12 matches in all competitions for the Royals.

Yann Kermorgant had cancelled out Jonathan Kodjia’s opener for the visitors, only for Villa to cash-in on Moore’s late error.

However, Moore admitted there is little time to dwell on the defeat with a visit to managerless Rotherham United this Saturday (3pm) followed by a mouthwatering EFL Cup fourth-round clash against Arsenal at the Emirates next Tuesday night (7.45pm).

“It’s about keeping doing what you’re doing,” said Moore. “We will go through the Villa game and then there will be talks to prepare for the game against Rotherham on Saturday.”

The loss to Villa may have been hard for Moore and his team-mates to take after they controlled large sections of the match.

But he is confident he will keep improving under former Netherlands and Manchester United defender, Jaap Stam.

“I have learned bits of the game, just small little tips that I have got from the manager,” he explained.

“Some say he was the best centre-half in the world and I agree with that.”
