READING veterans produced some superb performances to return from the British Masters Athletics Championships with a brace of silver medals.

More than 750 competitors descended on the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, but Karen Burles showed her class to finish second in the 35-39 400m in a time of 63.88secs. She missed another medal by the narrowest of margins in the 200m, finishing fourth in 27.45secs.

In the 100m, Burles lined up against ladies who had won medals in the European Masters Championships, and did very well to finish sixth (13.24secs).

The other medalist was Sue Francis (pictured above), who had a strong run in the 45-49 1,500m, finishing with a time of 5m 15.74secs.

Other representatives from Reading were Dave Shields, who jumped 9.20m to finish fifth in a very competitive 55-59 triple jump.

Sprinters Wally Franklyn (pictured below) and Bob Lewis have battled injury for much of this summer season, but both were able to compete at Birmingham, despite not feeling fully fit.

Franklyn clocked 13.52secs to finish fourth in the 60-64 100m, while Lewis (60.55secs) matched that in the 55-59 400m final.

He was fourth in his 200m heat (26.50secs).

Hari Sewell continued his excellent season by qualifying for the final of the 50-54 400m, but he was unlucky to draw lane eight and finished fourth despite running 57.64secs, close to his season’s best time.
