UNFORTUNATE Sonning 2nds had a Division 5b victory stolen from their clutches when their game at Reading 3rds was abandoned due to rain, writes Max Baker-Smith.

The visitors skittled their relegation rivals out for just 118, and went about chasing the total quickly.

However, after reaching 117-2 off 27.5 overs, the rain arrived and the game was ended prematurely.

In Division 2a, Kidmore End’s game with Chenies and Latimer was abandoned shortly after the second innings had begun.

Chenies and Latimer had posted 177-7, almost solely thanks to captain Chris May (79no). However, only one over was possible in the second innings as Kidmore ended 5-0.

Kidmore End visit Eversley on Saturday (12.30pm).

Relegation-threatened Wargrave lost to Burnham 2nds by three wickets in Division 2b.

Imran Malik (70) top scored for the second-bottom side as they totalled a competitive 197 all out, but Obaid Sarwar (65) – along with useful contributions all the way down the order – helped Burnham reach their target in the 46th over.

Wargrave host Thatcham Town this Saturday (12.30pm).

In the same division, Hurst’s game with Thatcham Town was also abandoned.

Skipper Ollie Lovegrove (60, pictured) top scored to help his side reach 181 all out, and it was set up for a good game with Thatcham 73-3 off 24 overs, but the rain arrived to ruin the contest.

Hurst are at home to High Wycombe 2nds on Saturday (12.30pm).

In Division 3a, Sonning’s home game with Yateley 2nds was abandoned with the table-toppers well on top.

Rehan Akram (104) top scored as Sonning declared on 242-5 in 46 overs, and Yateley 2nds were struggling at 121-6 when the rain came, stopping the hosts’ search for the last four wickets in its tracks.

Sonning visit Newbury this Saturday (12.30pm).

Purley-on-Thames’ home game with second-bottom Reading 2nds was also abandoned.

Patrick Allen (116) scored an excellent century for the Potters as they declared on 225-4, but only nine overs were bowled in the second innings, with Reading closing on 46-2.

Purley-on-Thames travel to Yateley 2nds this Saturday (12.30pm).

In Division 4b, Theale and Tilehurst beat Chiswick and Whitton 2nds by two wickets.

Skipper Ranveer Tomar (85) led the way for Chiswick as they were bowled out for a competitive 207, but Rob Why (74) starred in a successful chase for the visitors.

Theale & Tilehurst host Stoke Green 2nds on Saturday (12.30pm).

Hurst 2nds beat Fleet 2nds by 13 runs in a close-run Division 6b encounter.

Hurst were bowled out for just 112, but Tim Everitt (5-55) ensured their opponents were skittled for 99.

In the same division, Theale and Tilehurst 2nds lost at home to Cove 3rds by 40 runs.

Plenty of batsmen chipped in for Cove as they accumulated 211 all out, before Matt Farr (6-25) starred with the ball in dismissing T&T for 171.

Wargrave 2nds were thwarted by the weather as they looked to secure victory against Aldershot 3rds.

Rizwan Hanif (5-31) helped Wargrave dismiss their opponents for 150, and they were 98-4 off just 25 overs – largely thanks to Chris Lunn (65no) – before the weather had its say.

Purley on Thames 2nds’ game with Boyne Hill 3rds was also abandoned with the match evenly poised.

Pete Rackley and Tejpal Singh (both 68) helped the Potters reach 230-4 declared, and Boyne Hill were 111-4 in reply when the game was abandoned.

In Division 7a, Kidmore End 2nds (129-9) lost to Maidenhead and Bray 3rds (130-6) by four wickets, while basement boys Theale and Tilehurst 3rds (99-9) lost to North Maidenhead 3rds (102-2) by eight wickets.

Sonning 3rds’ Division 8a clash at home to Bagshot 3rds was called off not long after the start of the second innings.

The home side had posted 218 all out, largely thanks to Bhuwan Satwah’s 57, and Bagshot were 66-1 when the heavens opened and forced the abandonment.

In Division 9a, Kidmore End 3rds had victory snatched from their grasp by the weather against Cove 5ths.

Cove 5ths were bowled out for 114, before Kidmore End 3rds were 68-1 off just 12 overs in reply before rain halted their victory charge.

Elsewhere in the division, Wargrave 3rds claimed full points as Thatcham Town 4ths forfeited their game.

l SONNING Cricket Club will hold a ‘Day with the Stars’ as the centrepiece of their President’s Day celebrations this Sunday.

Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan, former England left-arm spinner Phil Tuffnell and Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood will all head to Pound Lane to offer their support.

The trio will play for the President’s XI against the club’s Sunday XI, beginning at 1pm, while there will be a number of other attractions on show.

There will be a fully stocked Beer & Pimm’s marquee and food including a vintage ice-cream van and fish and chips.

Entry and parking are free to anyone who wishes to come along, with gates opening at 11.30am.
