READING FC players went back to work this morning for the first day of pre-season training under new boss Jaap Stam.

The 43-year-old Dutchman took his first training session at Hogwood Park this morning as the club's first-team squad return from their summer breaks.

It is believed they could soon be joined by Dutch midfielder Joey can den Berg, who is expected to complete a free transfer to the Royals at some stage this week.

Most of Stam's squad will be taking part in today's session, except for those who have been on international duty this summer.

That includes full-back Chris Gunter and midfielder Oliver Norwood, who were on opposing sides in Euro 2016 on Saturday.

Gunter's Wales defeated Norwood's Northern Ireland 1-0 in Paris to secure their place in the quarter finals and a clash against Belgium.

Garath McCleary has also been representing Jamaica in the Copa America and will re-join the Reading squad at a later date.

But for those players who have returned to Berkshire, pre-season training can't start soon enough.

Goalkeeper and current Player of the Season, Ali Al Habsi, tweeted: “I have spent a great holiday with my family and friends. Now in Reading getting ready for the real work for the new season.”

Midfielder George Evans said: “Been an unreal summer with friends and family. Back at it tomorrow buzzing for the big season ahead.”

Striker Dominic Samuel added: “Pre-season starts tomorrow, back to the hard work.”

Stam will spend the next few weeks casting his over his squad to determine which areas need strengthening.

Reading have made one signing since Stam replaced Brian McDermott earlier this month following the capture of 22-year-old defender Danzell Gravenberch from FC Dordrecht on a three-year contract.

Stam said: “You have to look within your own squad to see the quality you have.

“If it's not there then I will need to talk to the owners about maybe buying a couple of new players.”

Meanwhile, Reading have been linked with Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett.

The 22-year-old full-back spent last season on loan at Celtic, and Stam could use his strong United ties to lure Blackett to Madejski Stadium.

Reports over the weekend also suggest Royals are keen on former Leeds United frontman, Mirco Antenucci.

The 31-year-old scored nine times for the Elland Road club before leaving at the end of last season, though Serie A side Cesena are also said to be interested.

However, Royals could face a battle to keep hold of Aaron Tshibola following reports suggesting a £2 million fee has been agreed with Norwich City for the classy 21-year-old midfielder.

Fellow midfielder Danny Williams has also been linked with Newcastle United, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Swansea City.

The 27-year-old USA international has one year remaining on his Royals contract and is widely expected to leave the Madejski Stadium this summer while the club's Thai owners balance the books.

In addition, Hull City are believed to be keen on Norwood, with rumours suggesting the 24-year-old could complete a £1.5 million move in the near future.
