A BERKSHIRE GOLFER who suffers from MS is aiming to raise awareness of disabled golf by playing at 18 courses on Monday, writes Richard Ashton.

Graeme Robertson was diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS in 1998 and his condition has deteriorated to the point he can barely walk across a room.

He requires a walking frame to get about, but despite his situation, he is set to take on the arduous challenge.

Robertson – who has been the non-playing captain of Team England for the past five years – will drive to each course and use a buggy to get round each hole on the 18 different courses.

He said: “I want to raise awareness of disabled golf and show the power of the human mind to overcome adversity, and that diagnosis of neurological conditions such as MS, Parkinsons and those who have had a stroke does not mean the end of your life. Sport is amazing at aiding therapy and rehabilitation, and improving your health and social life.

“Despite disability you can still do what you want to do – where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Robertson devised the drive2drive campaign to raise awareness and much needed funds to help fund Team England in Internationals and support the Disabled Golf Association with their infrastructure costs.

He continued: “I want to spread the word that disabled people can play some awesome golf. I have always loved the sport and despite my condition I have found a way to play again. Although my game is not as good as it used to be, I enjoy the challenge.

“More than that I enjoy being out in the fresh air with fun and friendship and the 19th hole. My wife Sue and I discovered the neurological and health benefits of playing golf back in 2010 so our focus is on golf as a therapy and for rehabilitation.”

Robertson added: “I’ve always had a positive outlook and a good sense of humour.

“I have met some very inspiring people with differing disabilities, who are using golf for therapy, rehabilitation and making new friends.

The 18 courses Robertson will play are: West Berks, Donnington Valley, Goring & Streatley, Badgemore Park, Hennerton, Sonning, Castle Royle, Beawood Lakes, Billingbear, Bird Hills, Mill Ride, Winter Hill, Stoke Park, South Bucks, Sunningdale Ladies, Royal Ascot, East Berks and Sand Martins.
