JACK Mundell (pictured) was named Reading Hockey Club’s player of the year at their awards dinner held at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell, writes Dave Wright.

He plays for their Refills team who are members of Division Three of the London League.

Blues’ Club of the Year award was shared by the men’s first and third teams. Chris Armitage, who skippers and manages the third XI, was voted clubman of the year. He also assisted the Rascals team.

There has been more success for two more of the club’s senior men’s teams.

London League Vets Division One champions Rustlers defeated their East Grinstead counterparts 7-5 on penalties following a 2 2 draw, while the Redsox, who finished third in Vets Division Two, beat Epsom Embers 3-1 in their respective league cup competitions,

Both finals were played at St Albans last weekend.

Reading Superveterans also lifted the Grand Masters division title.

Judith Barton, who heads the colts section at Reading, has been nominated for a national award. She is among seven nominees in the Unsung Hero category for the annual England Hockey Awards.

Club vice-chairman Liz Spencer said: “This is a fantastic recognition to someone who works tirelessly for the club and the colts section, who are our next generation of players.

“The colts actually make up half of our membership with nearly 500 under-18s.”

The awards dinner is being held at the Madejski Stadium on May 21.

Reading will be bidding for two national titles at the Lee Valley centre next Monday with the ladies’ 1A playing Chelmsford 2nds in the England Women’s 2nd XI Plate final at 3.45pm and the under-18s taking on Alderley Edge in the England Girls Under 18 Plate final at 11.45am.

Reading’s evergreen defender Richard Mantell has been named in England Hockey’s Premier Division team of the year.
