CHRIS Gunter is on the verge of signing a new contract with Reading FC, writes Anthony Smith.

Royals face losing the popular right-back on a free transfer this summer when his current deal is due to expire.

But talks between the club and the 26-year-old Wales international are progressing well and could reach a conclusion any day now.

Reading boss Brian McDermott revealed: “Gunts is still speaking to the club, so hopefully that gets tied up as soon as possible.

“I think it’s coming on. He has sat down with the club and had conversations. As soon as it’s done we’ll see him signing it.”

Gunter recently stressed his desire to spend his long-term future with the Royals.

He joined from Nottingham Forest for around £2.5 million in 2012, signing a three-year deal with the option of a fourth which he took up in summer 2015.

It was McDermott who brought him to Reading during his previous spell as manager and he has reassured Gunter that he wants to reward him with a new contract.

Gunter, who has made 151 league and cup appearances for Royals, said: “I want to stay and all the people at the club who make those decisions are aware of those feelings.

“If I was to sign a contract I’d like it to be as long as possible because you want to buy into that club and your future is settled.”

Gunter’s Reading and Wales teammate Hal Robson-Kanu and centre-back Anton Ferdinand will also be out of contract at Madejski Stadium this summer, though the club are likely to offer them both a new deal in the weeks ahead.

Reading are in FA Cup action this Saturday when they host Premier League West Brom in the fifth round (3pm ko).

Meanwhile, the date for Reading’s FA Youth Cup quarter final against Chelsea has been announced.

The tie will take place at Stamford Bridge on Friday, February 26 (7.05pm ko).
Tickets for the U18s clash must be bought in advance, priced £5 adults and £3 concessions.

They will be available to buy in person, by phone or online from Reading FC soon.

David Dodd’s Academy side reached the last eight of the competition by beating Sheffield, Fulham and Wolves in the previous rounds.
