IT was a night of shocks in the last 32 of the Snooker Shootout at The Hexagon, writes Richard Ashton.
World Champions Stuart Bingham, Shaun Murphy and Peter Ebdon, recent German Masters winner Martin Gould, defending champion Michael White and World No.6 Judd Trump all crashed out as the unpredictable nature of the one-frame-per-round tournament lived up to its nature.
Bingham went down 69-0 to Rod Lawler, Murphy was thrashed 85-0 by Zhou Yeulong as the victor made a fine break of 71, while Ebdon was downed 43-9 by David Morris.
Gould was made to pay for a costly foul in his 85-10 defeat to Andrew Higginson, the Widnes man claiming the match with an impressive break of 59.
White’s reign ended with a 66-1 reverse against Ben Woollaston, whose best effort was a 58 break.
Trump too came unstuck against an outsider, Robin Hull’s useful visit of 43 helping him to a 70-6 victory.
The match of the night saw Robert Milkins pull off a stunning comeback to defeat Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen. Milkins trailed 56-1 with less than five minutes remaining, but cleared the table to snatch a dramatic 61-56 win.
Ali Carter defeated Peter Lines 85-5 after compiling a break of 59, while Gary Wilson’s one-visit score of 57 proved key in his 62-21 victory against Stuart Carrington.
Former two-time World Champion Mark Williams came through unscathed after dispatching the tournament’s only century-maker so far – David Gilbert – 58-32.
World No. 10 Joe Perry is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament following a 46-38 success against Tom Ford, while Jack Lisowski thrashed Jimmy Robertson 67-0.
Welshman Ryan Day disposed of in-form Kyren Wilson 52-38, Joe Swail toppled Anthony McGill 39-1 and Luca Brecel moved into the last 16 with a 46-20 success against Xiao Goudong.
Ian Burns completes the last 16 following his 60-36 victory against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
Earlier in the day, John Higgins, Marco Fu and Barry Hawkins were all eliminated at the first round stage.
