(RE: 'No money' to expand primary, Chronicle, July 22) £1.6m of in year cuts to Reading Borough Council's budget were announced recently by the Conservative and Lib Dem Government.
The bulk of these cuts are in the area of education and children's services. As the Green councillor for Park Ward and before that as a local campaigner I have picked up a fair amount of casework connected to a lack of school places.
All of the primary schools in my area have waiting lists and so many children end up having to travel long distances to school.
I want to see a good local school for every child and the planned expansion at St John's Primary School was a positive step to achieving this.
I was therefore very disappointed to read that due to Conservative and Lib Dem cuts this is no longer happening.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg with larger cuts forecast for the coming year.
An attack on education is an attack on our children, their futures and the future of our society as a whole.
We must defend public services such as a decent quality education for all.
