WEST Berkshire Council announced last month the need to introduce new measures to manage the growth in demand on Adult Social Care.
Recent articles in the media have failed to accurately portray what this will mean to our frail and vulnerable residents and I wish to rectify this situation.
Over the years, the service has demonstrated robust financial management of social care budgets. Three unprecedented factors have led to the current overspend that now necessitate new measures to enable us to provide services within our resources. This has been a very difficult decision to make but it is important to understand the implications of new measures to manage demand.
This decision will not mean services will be cut, nor will there be a change in eligibility criteria.
Those receiving care services and support will continue to do so, but others who have yet to receive a service or need additional services may have to wait.
The council will also continue to safeguard its very vulnerable residents and to ensure that the services it provides are of a high quality and centred around the individual.
Councillor Joe Mooney.
West Berkshire Executive Member for Community Care
