SO MP Rob Wilson thinks that Gordon Brown is 'bunkering down' and 'isolated' at No 10 (Reading Chronicle, 9 July).

Who then was that British Prime Minister at the G8 in Aquila we saw on the television screens last week taking a leading part in the discussions about climate change, the world economy, and helping Africa to feed itself? It certainly wasn't David Cameron, who has not left his bunker recently except to campaign for some nasty right-wing Poles in the Euro-elections!

But going back to Rob Wilson, I am driven to ask what bunker he himself has been hiding in this year. He hasn't attended any of the summits the Borough Council has held to discuss the credit crunch and how to help local people.

He didn't attend the Gaza Crisis meeting on January 6 at the Pakistan Community Centre. He didn't come to Holocaust Memorial Day at the Civic Centre on February 1, and I don"t remember him at Mayor-making on May 20 or at Armed Forces Day in Forbury Gardens on June 28. Does he ever come south of the Thames other than to catch the train to London?

Cllr Tony Page

Deputy Leader, Reading Borough Council
