ONE of the proudest moments of my life was when I was presented with a Kukri by some of the Gurkhas who live in Reading.

It meant so much to me because I have very clear memories of my grandfather, who served alongside the Gurkhas, telling me how dedicated these men were to our country and the fact that they would do anything to defend all that it means to be British.

This service by the Gurkhas is recognised by the vast majority of our citizens and by all right minded politicians of all parties.

However, in a decision that shows how hopelessly out of touch they have become, Gordon Brown's Government again shamed our country and these fine people. By not giving the Gurkhas the full rights that they have earned and deserved, this Government brings disgrace on our nation and it urgently needs to rethink its decision.

The Gurkhas have served our nation with bravery, decency and courage. It is with real sadness that this current Government does not understand any of these traits. Prime Minister Brown, show Leadership and give these extraordinary people the justice that they truly deserve!

Cllr Andrew Cumpsty

Conservative Group Leader

Reading Borough Council
