Letter: Government cuts nothing to cheer
See also:
The packed benches of Conservative MPs cheering to applaud George Osborne’s statement last Wednesday give the lie to local Tory claims (Reading Chronicle, October 21) that these brutal cuts are down to Labour’s “financial mess”.
The truth is that the Tories are making these cuts because that is what they came into politics for. The LibDems are supporting them because they have been so completely absorbed by the Tories.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies has shown that the cuts will, despite what George Osborne claimed, hurt the poor and more vulnerable in society most. They will be particularly hard on women, who will lose twice as much as men.I don’t know if Reading’s Tory MPs were among those cheering, but it doesn’t seem to me that there is much to cheer about.

Report commentTrue, Government cuts are nothing to cheer, but our country with the largest, unsustainable deficit in history has no option. It must counter immediately Labour's legacy of debt and despair. The Coalition must act now to prevent deterioration of our pound. Events in Ireland and now similarly unfolding in Portugal, to be followed by Spain, Italy, Belgium. are tragic and serious. Who knows where this Euro contagion will lead? Higher interest rates, businesses collapsing, wage cuts and massive unemployment in the 25% to 30% region.
The new Government Coalition has absolutely no option but to act immediately and swiftly because there is NO MONEY LEFT. (As stated by that pathetic former Labour Minister Liam Byrne). Please leave aside political prejudices and face reality.
The facts are Brown was an utter disaster as Chancellor. He removed the regulatory powers from the Bank of England to monitor behaviour of the banks. He set up the FSA, a toothless organisation that went to sleep on the job. Despite many warnings over a 6 month period, this unfortunate organisation did not see the credit crisis coming, but blamed banks for dealing with complicated default swap financial instruments thus jeopardising the banking industry.
Brown's shifting of bank monitoring responsibility is the main reason for the UK banking crisis exacerbated by some unscrupulous bankers such as his friends at RBS, Lloyds & HBOS.
There was no confidence left in Brown to run a bath, let alone our economy. He was the architect of the biggest Government bail out in history that has virtually bankrupt our country. Hopefully, this new fresh Coalition Government will work hard and enable our country to climb back off its knees despite those that wish it ill.

Report commentIf anyone is in doubt about the truth of "Sterling's" article, they must be living in Cloud Cuckoo Land. Labour has cost every family at least £28,000 for each member, rising, and we are only paying the interest off on Brown;s "No more boom and bust" statement of lies.
In his case the saying would been more correct if it had been " No more boom, just BUST."
On top of this we have the EEC at the trough, pay increases all round, demanding millions more just to keep them there. High time for us to have a full referendum to stop the rot by voting on this pathetic lot. If we are in such a bad situation, we may as well go down fighting for our Sovereignty, our rights, and our decisions in the Country in which we live.
Norway seems to be doing very well, and so do other Countries who are not in the EEC but are in Europe at the same time. Let Scotland and Wales have full devolution, but included in this is that England does not have their MP's voting or even present in the House of Commons. If you prefer a Country better than the present England, then go there.
