I AM astonished that council officials have ordered a beekeeper to remove a beehive from the allotments in Oak Tree Road after complaints from four people afraid of being stung. ('Allotment bees must buzz off', Chronicle, August 19)

I am an allotment holder at nearby Armour Hill where there has been a hive for many years and there has never been a case to my knowledge of a person being stung, and in a lifetime spent in the countryside I have yet to be stung by a bee.

Therefore, it beggars belief that the council did not consult the allotment holders, as I am sure that they welcomed the hive to assist pollination. I suggest that these council officials along with the four protesters be made to sit down and watch the August 30 edition of Panorama on the BBC that highlighted the decline of British wildlife including bee populations that are vital for food producers and then reverse this ill-informed decision.

I K Baker (address supplied)
