NEARLY two years on from the consultation, the 'stopping up order' that would destroy half the Chatham Street roundabout and the south facing slip roads, the Government office concerned has been unable to negotiate a compromise deal between the applicant (Muse Developments and RBC) and the objectors.

Therefore there will be a public local inquiry to resolve the issue ('Public inquiry to be held over plans to close off sliproads on the IDR', Chronicle, July 15) .

Let's hope that common sense will prevail and this absurd scheme, which rivals the long dead one-way IDR in terms of its crass stupidity, will be consigned to the scrapheap of idiotic road schemes.

All parties on the Labour-led council of the day went along with this madness. The Common Sense Party organised the campaign against a proposal that would see traffic diverted around Great Knollys Street, North Street, Weldale Street and Greyfriars Road.

Don't forget that the ambulances are based in North Street and their response times would be sure to be affected by the diverted traffic.

Let's hope that the new coalition council policy of promoting roundabouts over traffic lights will now come down on the side of a common sense rejection of this absurd roundabout destruction scheme.
