Letter: Don't hang around for political reform

With all the polls pointing to a hung parliament, isn't it time the process of appointing a Prime Minister is brought up to date and out into the open?
According to the conventions of our creaking constitution, if the politicians can't sort it out among themselves the Queen must decide who forms the next government.
However, Buckingham Palace is desperate to avoid a situation where the Queen - unelected, unaccountable and answerable to no one - is drawn into political controversy. What we're left with are shadowy deals and secret memos.
If the Queen is unable do the job we reward her handsomely for, then she is constitutionally pointless and should be removed entirely from the political process.
That's why I'm backing Republic's campaign for a new republican constitution with an elected head of state.
