Letter: Four reasons to love my 4x4

I AGREE 100% with some of what Tony says (A 4x4 is a man's best friend, Comments on the web, Letters, January 21).

The rest he is ill informed about.

1. My 4x4 has large wheels and has a lighter foot print than most estate cars.

2. I run for the most part on green fuel, so pollute less than many cars.

3. There are 4x4 groups who help when we have floods, people who get lost in the countryside, search and rescue and so on.

4. I spent the bulk of my working life in the countryside; I would like to think, as a custodian, trying to make it better for people to dump rubbish in it (beds, three-piece suites, fridges, freezers etc).

Yes, I do drive the byways with as much right as anyone else who has a motor vehicle, but try not to do any damage.

A final point I would like to make is for everyone to please give the councils a chance to repair the damage that the weather has caused on the roads. I am not sure if people know that the men who drive the gritting lorries are the same men who repair the roads.

Are you expecting them to work 23 hours a day?

Lea, address withheld
