Letter: A 4x4 is man's new best friend

THIS is just to say that some 4x4 owners are helping others with their gas guzzlers. Some people like us, some do not, each to their own but not all 4x4s are gas guzzlers and do 25mph-plus to the gallon.

We have been helping all sorts of people in this weather. In Omers Rise, Burghfield, an ambulance with passengers had to get back to Royal Berks Hospital. We helped the fire brigade in our 4x4 Land Rover to recover the ambulance, we all worked as a team in this weather and did a great job.

Most people have been very pleased to have the help and to see someone.

I am president of a four-wheel drive club in Aldermaston in the Thames Valley area, called 4x4-withoutaclub.

You have to be careful as there are other 4x4 drivers out there who have not got a clue about the recovery of anyone's motor.

We are not all like this and most of us do a recovery for free.

  Well, yes Lea, I have to admit that your 4 x 4s are useful for a week about once every 25 years. For the rest of the time they pollute the atmosphere, damage the roads, wreck the country byways, and bully the rest of us. The most deplorable sight is to see the 4 x 4s turn up in their hordes outside the local schools containing one idle parent and one idle child. The health of both of them would be greatly improved if they learnt how to use their legs.
