I read with great interest Rob White's letter in your letters page (Chronicle November 19) on Afghanistan and I respect Rob's opinion on the war.
The point about the corrupt government in Kabul is well made and I applaud Rob's condemnation of the Afghan President's laws legalising making it illegal for a woman to leave the house without a man's permission and legalised rape in marriage.
I believe a phased withdrawal over the next two years is the only option for Britain as Kim Howells has pointed out; a minister who has actually had responsibility for Afghanistan and knows what he's talking about.
This was always an American project after 9/11 and we are the junior partner there. Let's secure our country here; bring our armed forces home out of harms way and concentrate on strengthening our intelligence and security services here at home rather than giving Taliban and Al Qaida fighters british targets to bomb and shoot at.
I agree with Rob White, where we differ is on timescale. It's time to bring our wonderful men and women in the Armed Forces home.
