IT’S official, I’m going to become a tennis fan. You never get this sort of nonsense at Wimbledon.

Is anyone else still bothering with the World Cup? I had these lofty ambitions of us reaching the quarter finals. Delusional or what.

At least I can now get on with all those jobs that I’d written off doing if England powered into the knock out stages. I know expectations were low, but this is disappointing even by England’s standards.

Did anyone see the team selfie that was posted online before the game against Italy? No wonder we lost, they looked like a bunch of blokes heading off on a lads holiday to Magaluf.

Of course, I jest. We weren’t particularly bad, the likes of Italy and Uruguay were simply better. Just when you thought Luis Suárez couldn’t get any more repulsive, he pulls another rabbit out of the hat. To be fair to the Liverpool striker, he’s probably one of the best players in the world at the moment. If Wayne Rooney is supposedly “world class”, Suárez is operating on a completely different level. Certain parts of the press are already clamouring for Roy to pick up his P45. With one of the worst showings in 50 years, there was inevitably going to be some backlash from the media and fans. Should we send him packing? I’m not so sure. The issues in English football stem far beyond the main man on the touchline. Quite whether anyone else would have dragged us out the group is hugely debatable. The so called “Golden Generation” including Beckham, Owen and Ferdinand routinely underachieved. What chance did this lot have?

Nevertheless, all is not lost. Unlike other England squads, there’s a likeability about this current crop of youngsters.

Despite the obvious frailties in defence, there was a swagger and verve about the side’s attacking play. The likes of Sterling and Barkley will gain valuable experience from this disastrous campaign.

You’ve got to doff your cap to the hardy souls that have trekked out to Brazil. It’s hardly a jaunt you can do on a budget. I just hope the fans are still making the most of it. In my experience, it’s always the football that lets down the trip.

As this paper lands on your doorstep, the players will have played their final game against Costa Rica.

For the sake of everyone’s sanity, and the nation’s dignity, here’s hoping it wasn’t a complete whitewash.
