Leader: Great souls, even greater sacrifices

SACRIFICE has been called the passion of great souls.

Today, Corporal Richard Green and his fallen comrades are returned home and the town of Wootton Bassett will turn out to honour great souls.

Those who serve in our Armed Forces - and the loved ones they leave behind - understand notions of duty, selflessness and sacrifice in a truly unique way.

Cpl Green told his family the last time he saw them that if anything should happen to him, he was doing the job he loved. This will hopefully give them some succour during the dark days ahead.

It is a sentiment invariably echoed by all British soldiers who have died in Afghanistan and while its sheer nobility is almost impossible to bear, it should never be taken for granted.

Politicians are always mindful to emphasise the gravity of taking decisions which put British lives in danger. The last few weeks have seen a scramble to prove that these words were and are supported by deeds - which makes it incredibly difficult to hear this week from coroner David Masters that the deaths of four soldiers which he had been investigating were due to "inadequate training".

But in an act of astonishing and characteristic magnanimity, the parents of one of the fallen soldiers immediately let it be known that they did not want these issues to detract from her bravery, dedication and selflessness.

Great souls indeed.
