YOU would never guess that a general election's in the offing.

Before 2010 is even a week old the people of Reading will have had a chance to meet Leader of the Opposition David Cameron and his Conservative colleague Chris Grayling, shadow home secretary.

But you'd better get used to it because they are merely the advance party for a battalion of suitors, of every political hue, intent on wooing us during a courtship which could last five more months.

With the expenses scandal making 2009 a bad year for parliament and the reputation of MPs in general, the politicians have a chance to restore our faith in parliamentary democracy.

Let's hope they do not waste this opportunity by making too many hollow promises they know they have no hope of keeping.

With Reading West 107th in the list of Labour-held seats the Tories must win to attain a majority, we are likely to find ourselves in the spotlight on many occasions before polling day. For all its faults, Reading has a lot going for it and much to be proud of, and in this pantomime season the politicians must be reminded that this particular Cinderella deserves to be at the ball.
