HEARTS and minds are funny things.
Our homegrown hero Danyl Johnson won instant praise with his first audition on ITV's X Factor. 'The best we've ever seen,' they said - but inexplicably the dance teacher with undeniable talent lost favour.
The public's minds might be saying yes, Danyl is an incredible singer. But their hearts seem to say that the out-of-tune Irish twins with the added novelty of bizarre hairstyles are more endearing.
While John and Edward Grimes are hilarious to watch and no doubt make good telly, their 'talent' is incomparable with that of Danyl and the competition's other singers, including Sunday's reject, Lucie.
Whenever some witty wordsmith combines two names and adds a snappy suffix, warning bells should sound. Such a word is unlikely to represent anything of genuine merit, but it does run the risk of artificially stimulating a 'craze sweeping the nation'.
What chance has showstopping Danyl got in the face of 'Jedmania'?
The saga continued this week as the ever-fickle public realised that all this support for the bumbling, adorable twins might actually mean gifted singers, like Danyl, losing out.
Contrary to everything anybody who has ever met Danyl has said about him, judges labelled him cocky and snide reports flew around the national press.
We love our Danyl and not just because this week he has backed our Toys & Teens appeal supporting disadvantaged children and teenagers here in Reading.
As hundreds of local drama students will testify, Danyl has always had the X Factor and his chance of future fame should not be jeopardised by Simon Cowell's commercial flirtation with the teeny-boppers' favourites, the weird twins.
