PHIL Woolas always came across as a charmless little nerd.
The nation applauded last year when his patronising ploy to derail the Gurkhas' fight for the right to settle in Britain was trumped by the majestic Joanna Lumley, luring him squirming in front of the TV cameras and then humiliating him during a chaotic press conference.
In another era, that might have terminated his undistinguished, gaffe-ridden government career but, perhaps demonstrating the current dearth of political talent, he was allowed to continue as immigration minister
