MY BIGGEST Reading band-crush, The Colours, are playing in town tomorrow.
They kicked off their first UK tour in more than a year last night in Bath, and take to the stage at The Oakford on Saturday night. The last gig they played there packed out the place and it was bouncing from start to finish - expect nothing less this time.
The three-piece have been busy recording, perfecting, recording for the last six months, and the gig will be the perfect opportunity to find out what they've been up to first hand.
When I met up with frontman Tom Pickford on Wednesday night he was pretty excited about the way their new tracks are shaping up, but what you'll hear on Saturday isn't just going to be a straight performance of some as-yet-unreleased EP. He said: "In our recordings there's absolutely loads of layers and it's a challenge for 3 people to put together live. So we use sound effects and all sorts to sort of mimic the sound.
"Different stuff works live and you can get people moving with just a kick drum, you don't need all the intricacies. You just get across the main points.
"Playing live is kind of a chance to show off, without showing off. People see us and we're just playing in a band but secretly...
"The tour is to show everyone what we've been doing and to promote the single. Because we've not toured in so long we're kind of starting again. In the future we might just do a few dates at a time.
"I think it's important to get out and see people but balance it with new stuff. We need to interest some people...we're not a 'cool' band for people to get into!"
Go! The Oakford Social Club, 7pm on Saturday, April 17, free.
The single is out next week - read more in Thursday's Guide.
