A HIT and run suspect has been jailed four months after causing fatal injuries to a pedestrian on Cemetery Junction last summer.

Joseph Wangige, of Courts Road, Earley, admitted to failing to stop at the scene of the fatal collision and was disqualified from driving for 14 months.

The 44-year-old was driving a Vauxhall Astra in June last year when he hit Russell Lee, 32, as he attempted to cross the road.

He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries three days later.

Sergeant Richard Grant, investigating officer said: "Tragically Mr Lee lost his life as a result of this road traffic collision.

"My thoughts remain with his family through what has been a very difficult time for them.

"Wangige has been convicted for not reporting this incident, not stopping at the scene as well as driving a car that had mechanical faults and did not have a valid MOT.

"I am pleased that he will be serving a custodial sentence for this and that he has been banned from driving."

Wangige failed to stop at the scene of the crash and was arrested at his home on the same day (June 8).

As well as mowing down Mr Lee, he was convicted of failing to report a collision, driving without an MOT and using a motor vehicle/trailer with equipment likely to cause danger of injury.

He was sentenced at Reading Magistrates Court on Friday, June 30.
