A COLOURFUL array of floats and vehicles lit up Woodley’s roads as its annual carnival took centre stage.

The 54th edition of the Woodley Carnival took place on Saturday, with a procession of 20 floats and vehicles parading through the streets.

Music and bright colours featured heavily in the display, with floats taking their inspiration from the D-Day anniversary, the World Cup in Brazil, Britain’s Got Talent and a disco theme.

Marching bands, cadet groups and youth groups also took part in the parade.

A fete that accompanies the procession attracted 5,000 people to Woodford Park, with a medieval theatrical performance depicting the story of King Arthur being the star attraction.

Youngsters could enjoy mini golf, a rugby challenge, football training, inflatable slides and obstacle courses.

There were also plenty of stalls hosted by youth groups and charities, with each looking to raise much-needed cash.

Peter Jacobs, a member of the carnival’s organising committee, said he was happy at the way everything went like clockwork.

He added: “Everything ran really smoothly and it was brilliant to see so many community groups coming along and supporting the event.

“There is always a great turnout and it is always popular with families and the young and old.”

Woodley resident Kevin Connell visited the carnival with his four-year-old son Euan, who was particularly excited by the mini golf course.

Mr Connell said: “We support the event every year as best we can and it is always a fantastic family event. Lots of people have come along too which is great for the town.”

Nicki Goodwin, who lives in Haddon Drive, Woodley, also attended with her daughters Summer, two, and Sky, six.

She said: “We only live around the corner so we always look forward to it every year. It is lovely and there is always lots to do for children.”

It is estimated the day raised about £12,500, with all profits going towards local causes.
