Over 50s rally for sport
VETERAN badminton players have been rallying to join a new fitness programme.
Woodford Park Leisure Centre in Woodley is hosting the over 50s coaching sessions, which are set to run for eight weeks with cash backing from Age UK Berkshire.
Sports officer Nick Rance said: "At our first session halfway through January, we had 32 people turn up to receive high quality coaching from a fully qualified coach with around half staying on after the session and booking courts to continue to play.
"It is proving to be a great success and we are seeing attendees coming back more and more and booking badminton courts in their own time, as well as enquiring about other exercise classes and badminton opportunities that we offer at the centre.
"It has certainly opened our eyes to how enthusiastic the over 50s are about keeping fit, and we are working on offering even more opportunities for them."
Rosie Peters, who attends the free sessions, said: "We are all very excited about being able to try and improve our badminton, and there are obviously many of us out there who would like to do so, judging by the numbers turning up each week."
The sessions take place from 1.15-2.15pm on Thursdays. Contact 0118 921 6969
