A WOODLEY man has kicked off the new year with popcorn, posters and projectors as he prepares to launch a new film club.
David Riley, 24, decided to set up 'Films at The Oakwood' as a cheaper alternative to paying full price at the cinemas. He said: "I do a lot of work at The Oakwood Centre because I run a small business offering light and sound for external hire companies using the centre, so I have seen a lot of different activities going on and have always wondered why no-one had ever set up a film club.
"We held a test screening in the summer and we had quite a few people turn up and some positive feedback, so we decided it was really quite a viable option."
The monthly club will hold its first meeting on Sunday at the Headley Road-based centre with a screening of The Smurfs on an eight metre projector screen, followed by Mr Poppers Penguins.
Mr Riley added: "Films are often released to film clubs before they are out in the shops on DVD, so we hope lots of people will be interested in the club, plus parents have all spent a lot of money over Christmas, so this is a nice, lower priced alternative."
The club will be launched with a double showing of two children's favourites, but it is hoped that films for adults will be shown in the future, as well as some artistic films.
Mr Riley said: "We have set up a Facebook page and we hope that people will post what they want to see, so that members can have a real input in the club.
"We would also ideally like to run the club more regularly demanding on demand, so we will re-assess this when we determine whether the interest is there."
Tickets are £4 for children, £5 for adults and £16 for a family of four and can be booked online at http://www.filmsattheoakwood.co.uk
A free bag of toffee popcorn will be handed out for every two tickets that are purchased in advance. Visit the club's Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/filmsattheoakwood
