BUDDING young artists gasped in awe when they caught a glimpse of their handcrafted posters displayed around Woodley precinct.

The four lucky winners beat more than 500 youngsters from schools across the town, who dug out their colouring pencils and got creative designing posters promoting this year's Woodley Winter Extravaganza.

Town centre manager Jacques Leherbier sifted through all of the entries to pluck out the top designs and first place went to Scott Plunkett, 10, from Rivermead Primary School. Miacarla Chapman,10, from St Dominic Savio Primary School and eight-year-old Casey Dorrell from Willowbank Primary School came joint second and five-year-old Thomas Poole secured third place in the hotly-fought competition.

The four winners came together on Monday to celebrate clinching the top spots and Scott said: "I was inspired to draw a choir of people singing Christmas carols because that is what happens in Woodley at Christmas.

"I really like drawing and I felt so excited when I found out I had won. I can't wait to go to the extravaganza now."

Casey, who designed a giant Father Christmas, added: "My teacher gave us all a letter about the competition and I thought straight away that I had to enter.

"I went home and came up with the idea, and handed it in the next day.

"I never expected to win, it was a shock, but I feel very proud."

Mr Lherbier has invited all of the winners along to the precinct for the Christmas lights switch on. He said: "The Extravaganza is the biggest event of the year for the town, and it is wonderful to be able to involve all of the children in the community.

"I had twice as many posters as usual and several arrived just before the deadline, so it was a tough task going through them all, but I am really pleased that we had such a great response and we can all now look forward to the jolly event."

All of the other submitted posters will be displayed in Woodley Library and The Oakwood Centre.

The Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday, December 3, the day before the Extravaganza takes place.
