WOKINGHAM Borough Council chief executive Susan Law has resigned.

Ms Law, who took up the post in 2007, announced her departure to staff on Friday, citing family reasons.

She will leave at the end of January and a replacement will be recruited through the normal process.

Ms Law, who is going back to her native New Zealand, said: "I have enjoyed my time at Wokingham Borough Council and particularly working with a dedicated team of officers and members.

"It has been a challenging time as it has been in the midst of a very difficult financial environment coupled with a potentially significant shift in the role of local government.

"Wokingham, as the lowest-funded unitary authority, has responded and continues to respond well to the financial pressures and with its Transformation Programme is well positioned to support its residents to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the 'Big Society'."

She added: "I am leaving for personal and family reasons, hoping to enjoy a Southern Hemisphere summer again."
