HUNDREDS of people showed support for Pakistan flood victims at a packed fun day.
The activities and games carried on for so long that a planned charity auction in the evening had to be postponed.
Reading Cultural Association hosted the event at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Rushey Way, Earley, on Sunday, the first available date after the end of Ramadan, and hundreds came.
Association chairman Babar Chaudhry spoke of his heartbreak at seeing millions of people who have lost their lives, homes or livelihoods in the disaster, but said Sunday’s event gave people a chance to have fun while also donating to the cause.
He told the Chronicle: “People enjoyed everything on offer from the food and clothing stalls to henna tattoos, jewellery and information stands.
“Our first speaker was Reading councillor John Ennis, who told us about his fasting during Ramadan to raise money for the flood appeal. He raised £1,410, which is fantastic. People from all over Reading came from every community.”
He said donations from the fun day were still being counted up.
Cultural Association committee member Rashid Kiyani said more money had been raised by volunteers bag-packing at the Lower Earley Asda.
The charity auction is now on November 21, at a venue yet to be confirmed.
